The Holy Spirit: The Giver and Sustainer of Life

Bible Verse: “It is the Spirit who gives life. [John 6:63]

Before the creation of man, there was no life, only dust. After forming everything else, God shaped man from the dust of the earth, yet man remained lifeless. Life came only when God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). This breath was more than air; it was the Spirit of God imparting life.

From the very beginning, human life has depended entirely on the Spirit of God. Without the Spirit, man would remain lifeless dust. The Apostle Paul affirms this truth in Romans 8:11, declaring that the same Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells in believers and gives life to their mortal bodies. This means the Holy Spirit is not only the source of physical life but also the sustainer of spiritual life.

Jesus Himself confirms this when He says, “It is the Spirit that gives life.” The Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome sin, walk in obedience, and live in a way that pleases God. Where the Spirit dwells, there is life, strength, and transformation.

Many believers struggle not because God is absent, but because spiritual life has grown weak. Sin, distractions, and trials can drain spiritual vitality. Today’s devotion reminds us that renewal does not come from human effort alone, but from yielding to the Holy Spirit, the giver and sustainer of life. When we allow Him to dwell fully in us, He strengthens us to live victoriously.

Prayer

O Holy Spirit of God,
You are the giver of life. Strengthen my spiritual life so that I may never be conquered by sin. I place my life and my entire being into Your hands.

Look upon me with eyes of mercy and forgive me in all the ways I have derailed. Come and live fully within me, that I may always seek to do what pleases God. Renew my strength and revive my spirit once again.

Trusting in You and hoping in Your mighty power, I humbly ask that You grant me these favors,(mention your intention).

Amen.
